We know why fans are ticked at Halloween Ends
It’s been five days since we saw the pre-release of Halloween Ends and our opinion has not changed unfortunately. The best way to sum up our feelings to David Gordon Green is to quote Mr. Clark Griswold,
“What a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, d!ckless, hopeless, heartless, fat-@ss, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey sh!t he is! Hallelujah! Holy sh!t! Where’s the Tylenol?”
Ok, maybe that is over the top, but seriously if you saw the movie and love The Shape then you can agree with us. For fun let’s take that Christmas Vacation metaphor one step further. If you were expecting a fantastic movie (a bonus you get every year) and you got this instead (a jelly donut membership) then yeah, this rant is 100% justified.
Having been Halloween fans since the 80’s and seeing all the highs and lows of the slasher film genre throughout the years, the first new Halloween movie (2018) gave us all high hopes that this would bring back the genre and really lay the groundwork for more of the icons to return in new and more thought out ways. (forgetting about the latest Texas Chainsaw movie of course) Then Halloween Ends came and just like the Batman and Robin disaster, this potential genre ending movie will probably seize any further slasher movies for a while that feature icons of the past.
Why are fans left so ticked off?
(Spoilers ahead)
The story we were given in Halloween Ends had no relation to the storyline we had going on since the 78 movie. The original movie dealt with this figure called The Shape that had one actual survivor in Laurie and he wanted to finish the job. He came back in 2018 to find her, killed everyone in Kills to get to her and it was supposed to End her in 2022. It was Laurie’s journey as a survivor that along the way introduced new characters because like life people change and enter/exit your life.
However, we got 1hr and 51 minutes of someone else's story. Ends was not a true Myers ending movie and that is why fans are so ticked off. The actual ending of the Laurie and Michael story was a backseat to an origin story of Corey. Sure we had our scenes of murder and chaos, but those scenes you remember were not Myers killing anyone. It was Corey AND that is the problem for die hard Halloween Fans.
Like you guys reading this, we paid our ticket price thinking we were going to see Myers on one last killing spree till the epic conclusion where both The Shape and Laurie would ultimately die. Man it would have been great to see Myers' knife be used by Allyson to stab through Laurie to finally kill Michael. The setup was so there too with Allyson coming back at the last moment to help Laurie. It would have brought that climatic moment into overdrive especially how Allyson held onto that knife in the Halloween 2018 version. - Just think of the final cutaway scene that we could have had. Instead we got Myers pinned by a fridge in a crucifixion pose on a kitchen island getting his throat slashed which would later lead into a crowd surfing body being shredded at a junkyard. Look, we couldn’t write that story if we tried but it seemed like the Green team did and that’s what we got.
So what was the purpose of this movie?
Honestly, we have no real idea. Could it be Hollywood sucking the last few pennies out of our pockets because the fans love Halloween? Could it be a setup to the next phase of Halloween movies?
We don’t know.
At the end of the day we saw a killer, a freakshow and a psycho and the freakshow finally got her happy ending.
